‘Wheels of Life’ for orphanage children in Chernobyl regions

LC Seating Ltd recently supplied 40 wheelchairs and 16 sleep systems to Chernobyl Children’s Project International (CCPI). This essential equipment will greatly benefit the children in Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum in Belarus.
Vesnova is home to over 115 children with various forms of physical and mental disability. CCPI has supplied regular humanitarian aid and Medical aid to this institution for over eight years. Along with a team of Irish builders CCPI continues to refurbish the institution to improve the living conditions for the children living there. Volunteer Medical Care and Nursing teams visit the institution every month.
LC Seating Ltd is led by rehabilitation engineer Luke Conway who has been working in the rehabilitation industry for ten years. Luke has been providing custom-made seating to suit the shape and size of clients to prevent further deformation of the body. For the children in Vesnova this means they now have wheelchairs suited to fit and support their bodies.
Luke travelled with his father-in-law Sean Hession and Occupational Therapist Dora Mukkilla to Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum in February 2009 to take measurements for the wheelchairs and to meet the children in person. In December, after a few months preparing and constructing the new wheelchairs and sleep systems, they returned to deliver the brand new equipment.
Marie Cox, CCPI Medical Co-ordinator, said “You could see the difference in the children immediately. They were sitting upright and were visibly more alert, their new wheelchairs make a huge difference to their lives.”
Luke explained “What motivates me is what I like to call the Smile Factor. When you see the kids in the seats looking happy and interacting with each other and the staff that makes it all worthwhile. It was a great experience.”
