The Door - Oscar nominated short film

Wednesday, 10th March 2010

Oscar nominated short film The Door is an emotional and beautifully told story of a man and his family dealing with the terrible aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. The film was made in Chernobyl contaminated lands by Juanita Wilson and James Flynn.

The film is 17 minutes long. The story is inspired by the book Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of the Nuclear Disaster.   The filmmakers explain that the film, "starts with an absurd act:  stealing a door. This raises a question in the viewers mind, a question that is not answered until the final shot."

In 2004, Chernobyl Heart, featuring Chernobyl Children's Project International, won the Academy Award for best documentary short.  The story of Chernobyl is really more about people than it is about the mechanics of the disaster; it continues to register emotionally with all who hear it, yet much of the story remains untold.
