Documentaries

In 1993, Adi Roche initiated, researched, developed and co-produced in close co-operation with Project Patron Ali Hewson a multi award-winning documentary on the effects of Chernobyl on Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine. “Black Wind, White Land - Living with Chernobyl”. This documentary was the first English language documentary on the Chernobyl disaster and has been screened in more than 30 countries winning the Golden Gate Best Documentary Award 1994.

This was followed by a number of other critically acclaimed documentaries such as: “Deaths Dream Kingdom, Alexei - Child of Chernobyl, Chernobyl Legacy”, “Blessed Are They: Poor in Spirit", "Chernobyl: A Nuclear Legacy and Facing the Future” for the BBC, RTE, and TV3 (Ireland).

In consolidating her continuing commitment to ensure that an accident of this magnitude and its tragic consequences should never occur again Adi researched, developed and planned the production of a documentary based on the illness ‘Chernobyl Heart’ in conjunction with HBO (USA). This documentary was awarded an Oscar at the Academy Awards in the Best Short Documentary category. This film was co-produced and directed by independent US filmmaker Maryann De Leo, working in close collaboration with Adi. The Oscar win helped to refocus the world’s attention once again on the Chernobyl disaster. Currently Adi is researching a documentary on nuclear energy and its human and environmental consequences with award-winning architect and energy consultant Duncan Stewart.

The Chernobyl Children’s Project International promoted and supported the production of a CD-ROM based on the moving story of Belarussian women, Sviatlana, living her life in the world’s most radioactive environment.

Adi Roche most recently collaborated with Jim Fahy, Western Editor of RTE Galway, Ireland to produce an hour-long RTE Documentary 'The Children Beyond Chernobyl' on the work of the charity in Belarus. This documentary sensitively deals with the plight of many of the forgotten children in Belarus - children who have been abandoned in orphanages and institutions. The documentary also offers hope - hope that thousands of volunteers, Irish and American, have given back to the children. These volunteers have rebuilt and refurbished orphanages and continue to offer Rest & Recuperation to children from the Chernobyl regions.
